  • Description

A new record was created at Sotheby's art sale in London Dec 7 when an unrecorded masterpiece by Dutch painter Frans Hale sold for the surprisingly high price of ???182,000. The picture - of an "unknown cavalier - had only been expected to bring about GBP48,000.

The painting - a companion to the world famous "The Laughing Cavalier" - was the property of Major D.J.Warde-Aldam, and was bought by Mr. Leonard Koetser a London dealer, acting on behalf of an anonymous English private collector.

A large proportion of the money made on the masterpiece will be used by Major Warde-Aldam to modernise and improve his estate at Healey Hall,Northumberland. More than twenty houses and cottages need electricity and mains water.

Once it was necessary for the children to be taught to trim oil lamps. When the children grow up these outdated conditions will be forgotten. Water will come from a tap - there will no more half-mile walk to fetch it. A great benefit reaped from the sale of an old master.
