Background: Palestinian and Shi'ite Lebanese refugees have been deprived of shelter by recent bombings in Beirut. The Bab Idriss area, the old commercial district of the Lebanese capital, is now in ruins. Left without housing, refugees have taken over former luxury flats, once the homes of wealthy expatriates, along the Beirut sea front. Other have occupied what used to be summer beach residences reserved for the upper classes. According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near-East, there are about 10,000 Palestinian and Shi'ite Lebanese 'squatters' in the area.
