  • Description

Far out over the Pacific Ocean, a massive air and sea search continues for a flier missing since 1 January.

A C-124 cargo aircraft belonging to the US Airforce vanished over the Pacific on 1 January on a flight from Japan to California (western US). The craft carried nine crewmen and the corpse of an American serviceman being returned for burial. Search planes and ships criss-crossed the area without result. On 10 January the hunt was abandoned and the men declared officially dead.

On 22 January, the crew of another C-124 on a routine tranS-Pacific flight sighted what appeared to be an orange life raft with one man aboard who, they said, stood up and waved. The search was immediately resumed.

A fleet of aircraft--numbering about 25--have been pressed into service as well as Navy and Coast Guard vessels. They are searching a 48 thousand square mile area some 11 hundred miles west of Hawaii. The first aircraft dispatched flew immediately to the position in which the C-124 had reported sighting the liferaft--but found nothing.

The original search produced tantalizing evidence that some of the missing men might be alive. An erratic signal from an emergency transmitter was received from time to time -- but never could be pinpointed with accuracy.
