  • Description

The residents of Moscow are not unused to having snow fall on their city.

SYNOPSIS: However, this year they have had to cope with snowfalls much earlier than normal. When the residents awoke last Wednesday (13 October) they found the city covered with a blanket of white.

As a rule the Soviet capital does not experience such cold weather until late in November. It's not the first unusual weather for the Soviet Union this year. While the rest of Europe had one of the driest summers of the century, particularly heavy rain delayed the Soviet wheat harvest. The eventual crop was over 195 million tons (tonnes) but that was ten million tons under the figure that was planned and needed.

If the snow caused problems for their parents, Moscow's children were quick to take advantage of the opportunity for lay it gave them. The snowfalls were a reminder of the approaching winter and the need to get the skates and skis ready for winter sports.
