  • Description

VISNEWS filmed strikers in Trivandrum, Kerala, India, demonstrating against the State's communist Government, June 30, on the first day of the general strike and the eighteenth day of the direct action campaign.

Pickets lay at the entrances to schools that were still open after the strike call and held up municipal buses in the main thoroughfares. One thousand and two hundred strikers were arrested on the first day of the strike. Since the beginning of this campaign, on June 12, 24, 961 people have been arrested for anti-government activities and twelve have died as a result of shot wounds in police clashes. Of the arrested 5,820 have been convicted and gaoled.

Kerala was at a standstill, June 30, and the streets were crowded with slogan-shouting demonstrators. Premier Nehru last week spent two days investigating the troubles and advised the Communist State Government that election should be held to allow the people to decide whether they still wanted a Communist executive. The State Government has ignored this suggestion.

Armed police patrol the city of Trivandrum bundling demonstrators into vans.

The 'direct action campaign' is supported by most non-Communist groups, including the Catholics whose schools are affected by the Government's Education Act.

The Parliamentary Board in New Delhi, meeting June 29, also suggested that elections be held.

Kerala is India's only Communist-controlled State.
