President Samora Machel of Mozambique arrived in Ghana on Friday (14 October) for an official state visit. President Machel was to have talks with Ghana's Head of State, General Ignatius Acheampong.
SYNOPSIS: President Machel arrived at Accra's Kotoka International Airport. General Acheampong and members of the ruling Supreme Military Council were on hand to greet him. During the visit, the two leaders were expected to discuss African problems, especially the Rhodesian question, as well as other bilateral issues.
Earlier this year, Ghana threw its support behind Mozambique and the other front line nations in the struggle against Rhodesian Premier Ian Smith's government. Ghana called for intensifying sanctions, for armed struggle and many forms of pressure against the Smith regime. It also offered moral and material assistance to the guerrilla movement.
After President Machel inspected a guard of honour, he met with members of the diplomatic Corps. Earlier this year in Accra, another front line leader, Zambia's President Kaunda, had urged support for anti-Smith forces.
