  • Description

More than 200 people of all races stood for two hours under a blazing sun in Johannesburg on Monday (January 26) in protest at the detention of the Anglican Dean of Johannesburg, the Very Reverend Gonville French-Beytagh.

The Dean, a British subject, is known as "The Fighting Priest" because of his stand against Apartheid. He was arrested last Wednesday (January 20) and has since been held in solitary confinement without charges being brought against him.

Many of the demonstrators were elderly. They stood silent and largely unmoving outside the main gates of Witswatersrand University for two hours, some handing out leaflets which read "This is a stand of silent vigil and witness. Silence is essential. If you are provoked by passers-by please do not respond either by word or deed."
The placards, in English and Afrikaans, called for the Dean to be either charged or released. As the demonstration took place, Johannesburg police announced that Reverend French-Beytagh, who is held under the Terrorism Act, will appear in court on Thursday (January 27) charged with subversive activities. The leaflets handed out at the demonstration called for repeal of at least Section 6 of the Terrorism Act, by which detainees can be held indefinitely without trial.
