  • Description

A CLIMAX TO OPERATION WIPE OUT CAME ON SATURDAY NIGHT OUTSIDE THE DJAKARTA POLICE HEADQUARTERS. A BONFIRE OF BEATLES, ELVIS PRESLEY, AND OTHER LEADING POP SINGERS' RECORDS, PLUS SOME 25,000 BOOKS, MARKED THE END OF THE OPERATION WHICH FOLLOWED PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S ORDERS TO SHUN "IMPERIALIST CULTURAL SUBVERSION" AND "CRAZY" MUSIC AND REVERT TO INDONESIA'S TRADITIONAL CULTURE.

SPECIAL GUESTS, REPRESENTING VARIOUS CULTURAL ORGANISATIONS AND POLITICAL PARTIES, WERE INVITED TO THE BONFIRE. SOME CARRIED ANTI-BEATLES PLACARDS, OTHERS CARRIED POSTERS SAYING "GO HOME GREEN" -- REFERRING TO THE RECENTLY APPOINTED AMERICAN AMBASSADOR, MR. MARSHALL GREEN.

POPULAR WESTERN MUSIC WAS BANNED IN INDONESIA LAST YEAR AND OWNERS OF RECORDINGS OF SUCH MUSIC WERE ORDERED TO HAND THEM IN TO THE POLICE BEFORE JULY 22ND OR FACE FIRM PUNITIVE MEASURES.

IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS POLICE HAVE CARRIED OUT A SERIES OF RAIDS THROUGHOUT DJAKARTA AND SEIZED HUNDREDS OF TAPES AND RECORDS OF WESTERN MUSIC.

THE PUBLIC PROSECUTOR THREW THE FIRST HANDFUL OF BOOKS AND RECORDS INTO THE FLAMES AND THEN REPRESENTATIVES OF EACH GROUP FOLLOWED.

THE BONFIRE WAS A MINOR PRELUDE TO INDONESIA'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS WHICH WILL BE MARKED ON TUESDAY BY PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S SPEECH TO THE NATION.
