  • Description

Seventeen thousand children, some of whom started arriving in Georgetown long before dawn from places more than 100 miles away, cheered Princess Margaret when she visited the city's cricket club ground this morning.

Standing in a Land Rover, she waved in response to a forest of fluttering Union Jacks. From a dais she listened to the song of Guiana's children, sung by the centre assembly.

Six children representing the colony's six races presented Her Highness with a paper knife made of local gold and diamonds. It was encased in hardwood.

The Princess, who, was wearing a lilac silk dress, with a full short skirt and lilac tulle turban hat, then went on to visit a museum and reading room, and the botanical gardens. At a civic reception she said she had been "greatly touched by the tremendous enthusiasm shown."
