Algerian President Houari Boumedienne arrived in Niamy on Sunday (28 May) for an overnight visit on his way to Monrovia where he was to take part in an Organisation of African Unity (OAU) commission on the dispute between Senegal and Guinea.

Background: Algerian President Houari Boumedienne arrived in Niamy on Sunday (28 May) for an overnight visit on his way to Monrovia where he was to take part in an Organisation of African Unity (OAU) commission on the dispute between Senegal and Guinea. The Algerian leader was greeted at the airport by Niger President Diori Hamani.
Upon arriving at the airport, President Boumedienne reviewed a guard of honour drawn for the occasion and met a number of government officials and diplomatic representatives. He was warmly greeted by the crowd.
During his short stay in Niamy, President Boumedienne had talks with Niger's leader who also gave a dinner for the Algerian head of state.
On Monday (29 May) the Algerian leader flew to Monrovia for the OAU meeting. In the dispute, Guinea alleges that Senegal is harbouring elements wishing to overthrow the regime of President Ahmed Sekou Toure. It was expected that President Boumedienne would also visit Guinea while on his trip.
The Algerian President was accompanied on his journey to Monrovia by Foreign Minister Abdelaziz Bouteflika, national security head Colonel Ahmed Draia. Higher education Minister Mohamed Ben Yahia and eight senior officials.
