  • Description

The storms were tracked along a 140-mile alley in southern Mississippi, and today, in the torn earth they recovered 12 bodies (one of a woman 107 years old) Original estimates of the injured were 130...the figure now is down to 70 hurt in the two hour series of vicious twisters. 13 communities were affected by the storms, which started just after the dinner hour.(25) No one knows how many homes were destroyed or damaged by the tornadoes: one woman said the storm sounded like "a million bells ringing"..an other witness said it sounded like a freight train. Power lines are down over a considerable area, and they had to cut giant trees off the road for rescue vehicles around Jackson, where these pictures were taken. In a tornado, most of the damage takes place in a few seconds: less than a minute. But the awful rushing sound the "freight-train" sound commonly associated with twisters can last longer. Near Jackson, when a tornado approached their home, the Charles Wright family started to sing the Lord's Prayer. They had sung it three times before the twister passed over and away. And there's a reminder from the weather bureau: the tornado season for this year is just now getting started.
