SYNOPSIS: Britain's Queen Elizabeth continued a tour of Turkey on Thursday, by visiting the ancient Greek and Roman city of Ephesus. The Queen was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne. The Royal Party spent more than ninety-minutes touring the ruins.

The ruins of Ephesus, which overlook the Aegean Sea, stands almost in its entirety with columns, marbled paved streets, a vast amphitheatre and ancient baths. The ruins were primarily discovered by the Austrian Archaeological Institute, which began work in 1954 -- almost a century after British archaeologists started excavating the site, which dates back over thirty-three centuries. The Royal party had driven from Kusadasi, a tiny resort village on the Aegean, where they landed from the Royal yacht Britannia to the cheers of tourists. They had also sailed down from Ismir during the night.

Following the tour of Ephesus, the Royal party had lunch at a resort hotel run by the granddaughter of the last sultan of Turkey. On Friday, they sailed from Kusadasi, through the Dardanelles to Istanbul for a three-day visit, before flying back to London. They went ashore briefly at Gallipoli to visit the memorials to troops, who died there in the first world War, during an ill-fated campaign.
