    In the Gabonese capital Libreville, on Tuesday (22nd December) an official function was held to mark the laying of a foundation stone for a large new sports stadium which will cost one billion 300 million (CFA) francs, and accommodate 50,000 spectators.

    M. Leon Me'biame, Gabon's Vice-President, represented the government at the function. The Minister of Sports, M. Nze Engoure, was also present and told the assembled guests that the stadium was designed to accommodate many different sports, including football and athletics.

    As is customary at this type of ceremony, a selection of everyday articles was placed inside the base of the foundation stone. The building contractors....Salim Enterprises....were represented at the ceremony by a senior official.

    After two main speeches the foundation stone was placed in position and a date plaque cemented to the upper surface.
