  • Description

Hundreds of banner-carrying demonstrators marched through the streets of Paris today to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of fall of the Paris Commune. The marchers included a number of delegations from overseas Communist Parties. The Commune collapsed on May 23, 1871 after just two months in possession of the city.

The Communards forced the Government and its army to retreat from Paris to Versailles, but two months later were crushed by massive artillery and cavalry attacks by the Government forces.

Some 25,000 thousands of Communards were killed in the attack and many buildings destroyed as the capital was taken district by district in a bitter week of street fighting in the last week of May.
