  • Description

Kjell Isaksson of Sweden broke his own world indoor pole vault record with a leap of 17 feet ten and one-half inches (5.44 metres) at Madison Square Garden, New York, last Saturday (February 26).

Although 15,000 track and field fans were on hand Friday night for the U.S. Amateur Athletic Union Championships, only a thousand or so remained to see Isaksson set his new mark just after mid-night.

In other events held earlier in the meet, Del meriwether of the U.S.A. won a victory in the 60 yard (54.9 metres) dash, a race that got off to a bad start.

Jamaica's Byron Dyce, picked to win the one-mile run after Marty Liquori of the U.S. dropped out of it the day before, did so with a time of 4.01 minutes. In the high-jumping event Gene White of the United States triumphed over fellow countryman Reynaldo Brown clearing the bar at seven feet two inches (just over two metres).
