  • Description

Film contains general shots of Memorial Service for the 35 (thirty-five) Navy men, who were killed in a mid-air plane crash above Rio de Janeiro Harbor, in Guanabara Bay (CQ), just below the famed Sugar Loaf. There were only three survivors in the Navy Plane, a DC-6 (D.C. - Six). The twenty-six persons in the Brazilian passenger plane, which crashed into the Navy plane were killed, total casualties: 61 (sixty-one). The Brazilian plane was a DC-3 (D.C.-Three). The crash occurred early in the afternoon on February 25th.

In the crash, 19 (nineteen) members of the Navy Band, which is temporarily assigned to the U.S.S. Macon or the Eisenhower Tour, were killed. The ten-member string section of the band was wiped out, so that a concert the band played for Buenos Aires dwellers in the open air was without a string section.

The other navy men killed were seven members of an Anti-Submarine Warfare Group, which had come to Argentina to help look for a submarine the Argentine Navy said it had found in Argentine waters. And the eight crew members were killed. The three survivors were from the ASW (CQ) Group.

At the Memorial Service, the Macon's Chaplain, Lieutenant Commander R. W. Below (CQ) (who is shown on the platform in a couple of the shots), said in part:
"In a real sense these men are Heroes. They gave their lives in the cause of peace. They were ambassadors in the highest and best sense, speaking in a universal language to the hearts of men without regard of border, breed or birth."
Near the end of the last roll there are some shots of Catholic Mass for the dead.
