  • Description

ABOUT 700 HELMETED STUDENTS STAGED A DEMONSTRATION IS SASEBO YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AGAINST THE THREE-DAY VISIT OF THE US NUCLEAR SUBMARINE "PLUNGER." THE "PLUNGER" IS THE FIRST U.S. NUCLEAR SUBMARINE TO VISIT A JAPANESE PORT IN SEVEN MONTHS FOLLOWING THE DETECTION OF ABOVE NORMAL RADIOACTIVITY IN SEAWATER IN SASEBO LAST MAY WHILE THE U.S. NUCLEAR SUBMARINE "SWORDFISH" WAS THERE.

THE DETECTION LAST MAY OF ABOVE NORMAL RADIOACTIVITY IN SASEBO'S SEAWATER SPARKED OFF A FIERCE CONTROVERSY IN JAPAN. BUT THE UNITED STATES DENIED THAT THE ABNORMAL RADIOACTIVITY WAS CAUSED BY ITS SUBMARINE. THE "PLUNGER" IS A 3,750-TON SUBMARINE WITH 117 MEN ABOARD IT IS ANCHORED IN SASEBO ALONGSIDE THE SUBMARINE TENDER AJAX")
ONE STUDENT WAS ARRESTED AFTER A BRIEF CLASH WITH THE POLICE JUST BEFORE THE "PLUNGER" ARRIVED INTO SASEBO. MORE STUDENTS AND ABOUT 40,000 SOCIALISTS AND TRADE UNIONIST ARE EXPECTED TO JOIN THE DEMONSTRATION AND OVER 4,000 RIOT POLICE ARE STANDING BY. ALL JAPANESE OPPOSITION PARTIES HAVE PROTESTED AGAINST THE PLUNGER'S VISIT.

A STRICT MONITORING SYSTEM HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO CHECK POSSIBLE RADIOACTIVITY. A NOTICE BOARD IS DISPLAYED TO INFORM THE PUBLIC OF MEASUREMENT RESULTS. THE UNITED STATES AUTHORITIES HAVE PROMISED THAT THE PLUNGER WILL NOT RELEASE ANY RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL IN THE PORT.

(BIG CLASHES OCCURRED IN SASEBO EARLY THIS YEAR WHEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR-POWERED AIRCRAFT CARRIER "ENTERPRISE" VISITED THE PORT.)
