  • Description

THE ANGLO-FRENCH CONCORDE AIRLINER PASSED SMOOTHLY THROUGH THE SOUND BARRIER FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY (WEDNESDAY). CONCORDE 001 - THE FRENCH PROTOTYPE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY AIRLINER - FLEW IN EXCESS OF THE SPEED OF SOUND FOR NINE MINUTES DURING ITS 45TH TEST FLIGHT.

TEST PILOT ANDRE TURCA TOLD NEWSMEN THAT THE GIANT AIRLINER HAD BEHAVED BEAUTIFULLY DURING THE FLIGHT. THE CREW'S ONLY INDICATION THAT CONCORDE HAD BROKEN THE SOUND BARRIER WAS THE READING ON THE MACHMETRE, M. TURCAT ADDED.

THE AIRLINER FLEW AT MACH 1.05 - 1,150 KMS (715 MILES) PER HOUR - BETWEEN THE LOT DEPARTMENT OF FRANCE AND ITS BASE AT TOULOUSE.

OFFICIALS LATER SAID THAT TRAVELLING AT THIS SPEED, AND AT AN ALTITUDE OF 35,000 FEET, THERE WAS NO QUESTION OF CONCORDE PRODUCING A SONIC BOOM. THE AIRLINER WILL HAVE TO REACH SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF MACH 1.15 BEFORE THE SONIC BOOM - A CONTROVERSIAL ASPECT OF THE PROJECT - IS PRODUCED.

IT IS NOW SEVEN MONTHS SINCE THE DROOP-NOSED CONCORDE MADE ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT. THE 148-TON AIRCRAFT IS DUE TO GO INTO SERVICE IN 1974, INTRODUCING SUPERSONIC COMMERCIAL AIR TRAVEL TO THE WESTERN WORLD. IT WILL BE CAPABLE OF CRUISING AT TWICE THE SPEED OF SOUND.
