  • Description

The first major snowstorm of the winter hit the United States on Thursday night (December 31) laying a blanket of snow across the north-east of the country. New York woke up to eight inches (20 centimetres) of snow on Friday morning (January I) and a snow emergency was declared.

The fall of snow closed New York's La Guardia and Newark airports and affected flight operations at Kennedy airport. Thousands of workers in the New York Snow Removal Force were called out to clear the roads and pavements, and to dig out cars. However New York Firemen refused to join the snow-clearing operations and even to clear the forestation driveways, alarm boxes and equipment as part of their pay dispute with the City authorities.

As always, the children made the most of it tobogganing and playing in the snow.
