  • Description

FIVE MINUTES AFTER AN ART EXHIBITION OPENED IN COPENHAGEN, DENMARK, NOVEMBER 17, POLICE ARRIVED AND REMOVED CERTAIN OF THE EXHIBITS, WHICH THEY ARE REPORTED TO HAVE TERMED AS "PORNOGRAPHIC".

THE THREE OBJECTS REMOVED ARE COPIES OF WORKS BY DANISH ARTIST WILHELM FREDDIE. THE ORIGINAL WORKS WERE CONFISCATED BY THE POLICE IN 1937, WHEN FREDDIE WAS GIVEN 10 DAYS IMPRISONMENT FOR DISPLAYING THEM AT A PRIVATE EXHIBITION. HE MADE THE COPIES THIS YEAR AFTER HE FAILED TO SECURE THE RELEASE OF THE ORIGINALS FROM POLICE CUSTODY.

BEFORE THE NOVEMBER 17 EXHIBITION OPENED, FREDDIE ISSUED INVITATIONS TO "CLOSE ACQUAINTANCE ONLY". THE COVER OF THE INVITATION BORE THE TITLE "SEX-SURREAL". IN IT, HE SAID HE WOULD EXHIBIT HIS WORKS FOR THREE DAYS. THE POLICE OBVIOUSLY HAD OTHER IDEAS.

FREDDIE CALLS HIS THREE WORKS "SEX-PARALYSAPPEAL. SURREALISTIK OBJEKT", "PSYCHO-FOTOGRAFISK FAENOMEN VERDENSKRIGENS FALDNE" (DEAD OF THE WORLD WAR); AND "FORNOJELSERNES LEGIONAERER" (LEGIONAIRES OF PLEASURE).
