  • Description

Beset by internal political and financial discontent, Sudan' President Jaafar El-Nimeiry, struck out at foreign interventionists and called for national unity when he opened the Second Annual Youth Festival, recently, in Wau.

The enthusiastic crowd cheering and carrying placards denouncing imperialism and mutinies, gave Nimeiry his warmest public reception in months
Without going into great detail Nimeiry told them that progress in quelling the insurrection in the Southern provinces was being made. He cited the return of refugees and the opening of schools in the area as evidence of government advances.

SYNOPSIS: Sudanese president Jaafar El-Nimeiry travelled to Wau last week (Wednesday, June 9) to open a three-day Youth Festival. The greeting was the warmest public reception the beleaguered president has had in several months. He has been under severe left-wing pressured for having purged his government of the communist who were vital to his coup two years ago. Attempts to heal the rift by a Soviet delegation to Khartoum and a visit to Moscow by Nimeiry seem to have failed.

Nimeiry saluted his supporters who were in a colourful procession, displaying the slogans of his administration. Many slogans dealt with anti-imperialism. President Nimeiry has been claiming foreign intervention as a major stumbling block in his government's problems with the Anya Nya...the secessionist forces in the three southern provinces. Past attempts at social and political reform in the area have failed to pacify a military situation which some journalists have likened to Vietnam and Biafra.

The President told the crowd his latest attempts at restoring order had shown signs of success. And he called once again for national unity, to the approval of the cheering Sudanese.
