Background: A Brazilian naval soccer team beat on Ivory Coast armed forces team by three goals to one in Abidjan, Saturday (9 August). The Brazilian eleven was made up of soldiers from two warships which sailed into Abidjan harbour for a four-day goodwill visit.

SYNOPSIS: The Brazilian Navy flotilla, composed of two small destroyers-- the "Sergipe" and the "Alagoas"-- docked at Abidjan harbour on Saturday. The boats, their 29 officers and 250 crew members came to the capital of the Ivory Coast for a friendly visit.

The marines left Brazil's east coast on July 27th. They are expected to stay in Abidjan for four days and then return to South America. On their way back they are expected to rendezvous with a Brazilian training ship for exercises in the Atlantic Ocean.

On arrival in Abidjan, the Brazilian Ambassador to the Ivory Coast, Senhor Marcello Raffaelli, launched the marine's social programme with an inspection aboard highest ranking officer, Admiral Maricel Walter Faria, will pay a courtesy visit to the Ivory Coast's President Houphouet-Boigny and will see defence and police chiefs and the mayor of Abidjan
The sailors had their own social programme arranged--they formed a soccer team and challenged their hosts to a match. The Brazilian eleven--in red and white shirts--kicked off the friendly match in Abidjan's Houphouet-Boigny stadium.

The Brazilian navy team seemed to have the game under control from the early stages, and an early goal put them one - nil in the lead.

Later they missed a penalty, and the Ivory Coast team equalised, but the Brazilians won the match by three goals to one.
