  • Description

A QUARTER OF A MILLION EGYPTIANS CROWDED INTO REPUBLICAN SQUARE IN CAIRO ON WEDNESDAY (JULY 22) FOR THE TRADITIONAL ADDRESS OPENING OF CELEBRATIONS COMMEMORATING THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE REVOLUTION WHICH OVERTHREW KING FAROUK.

THE ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR COINCIDED WITH THE END OF THE SECOND CONFERENCE OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (OAU), AND A NUMBER OF DELEGATES STILL IN CAIRO JOINED PRESIDENT NASSER IN SPEAKING TO THE HUGE CROWD.

AMONG THE AFRICAN LEADERS SHARING THE ROSTRUM WITH THEIR HOST WERE PRESIDENT BEN BELLA OF ALGERIA; EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE OF ETHIOPIA; PRESIDENT SEKOU TOURE OF GUINEA; ROBERTO HOLDEN OF THE ANGOLA GOVERNMENT IN EXILE AND JOMO KENYATTA, THE PRIME MINISTER OF KENYA.

THE LEADERS PRAISED THE EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION AND HELD IT AS A GUIDE FOR THE NEWLY EMERGING NATIONS OF AFRICA - THOSE WHO HAD WON THEIR INDEPENDENCE AND THOSE WHO WERE STILL TRYING TO GAIN IT.

JOMO KENYATTA, THE PRIME MINISTER OF KENYA, WHO SPOKE IN ENGLISH SAID:
PRESIDENT BEN BELLA AND PRESIDENT NASSER BOTH SPOKE IN ARABIC, WHILE PRESIDENT SEKOU TUORE SPOKE IN FRENCH.

IN HIS SPEECH, THE U.A.R. LEADER SUMMED UP THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE U.A.R. AND ITS PEOPLE SINCE THE OVERTHROW OF THE MONARCHY IN 1952. HE ALSO REFERRED TO THE STRUGGLE AGAINST IMPERIALISM IN THE ARAB WORLD AND WARNED THAT NO MATTER WHAT BRITAIN MIGHT DO, NOTHING COULD CHANGE THE FACT THAT THE YEMENI REPUBLIC WAS FIRMLY ESTABLISHED.
