    ONE OF THE BREWERIES, SOLIBRA IN ABIDJAN, PRODUCES 3,000,000 LITRES OF BEER EACH YEAR AND 12 MILLION LITRES OF SOFT DRINKS. IT EMPLOYS 200 IVORIENS AND 20 EUROPEANS.

    THE BREWMASTER IS A BELGIAN WHO FORMERLY WORKED IN THE CONGO, BUT ONE OF HIS MAIN TASKS IS TRAINING LOCAL WORKERS. WORKING WITH HIM AS "QUALITY EXPERT" IS AN IVORIEN. TOGETHER THEY SAMPLE EACH NEW BREW TO MAKE SURE THAT IT REACHES THE NECESSARY STANDARD.

    AT THE SOLIBRA BREWERY EDUCATION GOES HAND-IN-HAND WITH THE JOB. NIGHT CLASSES ARE HELD FOR THE WORKERS AT WHICH READING AND WRITING ARE TAUGHT. ONCE A WEEK THEY TUNE INTO AN EDUCATIONAL BROADCAST ON CIVIC AFFAIRS, PUT OUT BY THE IVORY COAST TELEVISION STATION.

    THE CONSUMPTION OF BEER, WINE AND SOFT DRINKS IN THE IVORY COAST EQUALS 19 LITRES A YEAR PER HEAD OF THE POPULATION. LOCALLY PRODUCED SOFT DRINKS TOTAL 21,300,000 LITRES, AND THE IVORIENS ALSO DRINK 35,000,000 LITRES OF IMPORTED WINE.

    SO FAR THE PRODUCTIONS OF SPIRIT PRODUCTION OF SPIRIT ALCOHOL IS FORBIDDEN, BUT THERE ARE PLANS TO MAKE BANANA WINE AND POSSIBLY RICE WINE IN THE FUTURE. BANANAS ARE PLENTIFUL AND THE IVORY COAST PLANS TO BECOME ONE OF THE WORLD'S MAJOR RICE PRODUCERS WITHIN THE NEAR FUTURE.
