    More than two thousand couples were married in Lima by Peruvian civil authorities on Sunday (20 June) in what was called the largest mass wedding in the country's history.

    Ninety-eight percent of the couples already have between five and eight children. The mass wedding was part of the Government's programme to legitimise the legal status of many children, and to compile more detailed records of families who have recently moved from rural areas to urban Lima.

    SYNOPSIS: Over twenty thousand curious peruvians crowded into Lima's main plaza on Sunday to watch the country's largest-ever mass wedding...more than two thousand couples took their wedding vows in the ceremony conducted by religious and civil authorities.

    The Auxilliary Bishop of Lima, Monsignor Luis Bambaren, offered a mass for the couples before the civil ceremony started.

    The age differential was apparent int he large ceremony. The oldest participant large ceremony. The oldest participant was a 77-year-old Japanese man....he married a 47-year-old Peruvian woman.

    Ninety-eight per cant of the couples already have between five and eight children. The mass ceremony was part of the Government's programme to legitimise the legal status and the rights of many Peruvian children, and to compile more detailed records of families who have recently moved from the rural districts into urban Lima.

    As a further marriage incentive, the Government provided and distributed the wedding gifts for the newly-married couples.

    The mayor of Lima's Comes district told the couples that their wedding registration records weighed more than a thousand pounds (500 kilograms). One of Peru's national orchestras later provided the music for the wedding dance.
