  • Description

THE FRENCH COMMUNIST PARTY DECIDED TONIGHT (2 JUNE) TO CALL ON ITS SUPPORTERS NOT TO VOTE IN THE VITAL SECOND BALLOT FOR THE PRESIDENCY ON JUNE 15. THE DECISION GREATLY INCREASES THE CHANCES OF VICTORY FOR THE GAULLIST FORMER PREMIER GEORGES POMPIDOU.

    M. POMPIDOU GAINED OVER 44 PER CENT OF THE VOTING IN SUNDAY'S FIRST ROUND. INTERIM PRESIDENT ALAIN POHER WON JUST OVER 23 PER CENT, AND HIS CHANCES OF WINNING DEPEND UPON ATTRACTING LARGE NUMBERS OF THE 21 PER CENT WHO VOTED FOR THE COMMUNIST CANDIDATE JACQUES DUCLOS.

BUT AFTER TONIGHT'S MEETING, M. DUCLOS READ THE ANNOUNCEMENT WHICH, IF FOLLOWED, SEEMS LIKELY TO LOSE HIM THE ELECTION.
