    WASHINGTON, MARCH 18 (AP) -MORE THAN 30 COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM NORTHEASTERN STATES MAINTAINED A CHILLED SIT-DOWN VIGIL IN FRONT OF THE WHITE HOUSE TODAY, DEMONSTRATING IN SUPPORT OF THE DRIVE TO REGISTERED NEGRO VOTERS.

    HUDDLED IN BLANKETS, PONCHOS AND SLEEPING BAGS ON PAVEMENT WET FROM ALL-NIGHT RAIN, THE GROUP SAT IN A LINE JUST OUTSIDE THE TALL IRON FENCE SEPARATING THE WHITE HOUSE GROUNDS FROM PENNYSLVANIA AVENUE PEDESTRIANS.

    THE DEMONSTRATION BEGAN YESTERDAY WHEN YEARLY 200 STUDENTS MARCHED TWO MILES TO THE WHITE HOUSE IN A PELTING SNOW AND SAT IN SLUSH AT THE SAME SPOT. YESTERDAY'S DEMONSTRATION LASTED NEARLY FIVE HOURS BEFORE THE STUDENTS MOVED AWAY TO HOLD A STRATEGY MEETING. SOME OF THEM RETURNED LATER IN THE NIGHT TO BEGIN THE NEW SIT-IN.

    THE STUDENT NON-VIOLENT COORDINATING COMMITTEE IS SPONSORING THE DEMONSTRATION.

    THE BREAK-UP LAST NIGHT CAME AFTER NEWS THAT TWO PEACEFUL CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATIONS HAD TAKEN PLACE IN ALABAMA. PARTICIPANTS INDICATED THEN THAT THEY DID NOT EXPECT TO COME DURING THE NIGHT.
