Background: The Italian national soccer team regained some of their old attacking flair to beat Greece 3-2 in a friendly international in Florence on Tuesday (30 December).

Striker Pulici was Italy's most effective player and he slammed home two goals with the other coming from Savoldi, who made no mistake with a penalty kick.

The game was open and fast and showed that England will have problems when they meet the Italians in the World Cup qualifying rounds.

Thirty thousand people were kept on their toes throughout the match as play see-sawed from one end of the field to the other.

Italy grabbed an early lead through Pulici. Greece hit back through Serafis after a sweeping attacking movement that started in their own ten-yard box.

Italy went back into the lead when Pulici hit his second goal, but again Greece equalised late in the second half when Kritikopoulos scored.

The game was decided after a foul in the Greek penalty area gave Savoldi the chance to hammer home his penalty just before full-time.

SYNOPSIS: Thirty thousand people turned out to support the Italian national soccer team in their friendly international match against Greece in Florence on Tuesday.

And the Italians didn't let their supporters down. They re-captured some of their old attacking flair and made the game a spectacular affair.

Italy drew first blood through their most effective forward, Publici. He hammered home the first goal.

Italy were showing no signs of the dour defensive pattern the team has been criticised for so often in recent internationals. They took the game to the Greeks, who responded with some exciting football of their own. One of those sweeping Greek movements led to their first goal.. it started in their own ten-yard box and ended when Serafis put the ball in the back of the net at the other end of the field.

But shortly before Halftime Italy grabbed the lead again....and again it was Publici who added the finishing touch. The Italians led 2-1 at the break.

However, the Greeks were far from finished. They staged a surging second-half comeback.

Winger Kritikopoulos weaved an exotic touchline burst that left three Italian defenders in his wake before hitting the equaliser.

But there was more drama to come.

After a heavy tackle in the Greek penalty area, the referee ruled a foul and Savoldi was left with the chance to hit the Italian winner with his penalty attempt. He made no mistake to give the Italians a 3-2 victory.
