Background: When South Vietnamese forces entered Laos earlier this year, it marked the first time that South Vietnamese Marines fought as a division. Previously, they had been used a shock troops, rushed from area to area as crises developed. Although heavily supported by American airpower, the marines have fought for and held firebases inside Laos. Some reports say the marines now have the initiative in Laos, and are fighting from positions previously held by the North Vietnamese troops.
