  • Description

GIBRALTAR TODAY (FRIDAY) CELEBRATED THE 187TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE "GREAT SORTIE". THE ANNIVERSARY WAS MARKED BY A BIG MILITARY PARADE WHICH WAS WATCHED BY MOST OF THE BRITISH COLONY'S CITIZENS. THE PARADE -- THE FIRST MAJOR MILITARY PARADE ON SORTIE DAY SINCE 1939 -- COMMEMORATED THE SORTIE BY THE BRITISH ARMY IN 1781 WHEN THE ROCK WAS BESEIGED BY FRANCE AND SPAIN.

THE SORTIE WAS THE PLAN OF BRITISH GENERAL ELIOTT WHO HELD THE ROCK -- A BRITISH POSSESSION SINCE ITS CAPTURE FROM SPAIN IN 1704 -- FRO A DETACHMENT FROM THE GARRISON RELIEVED A DESPERATE SITUATION BY DESTROYING ENEMY FORTIFICATIONS AND GUNS.

TODAY'S LARGE SCALE CELEBRATIONS WERE HELD BECAUSE THE DESCENDENTS OF THE CORPS WHO TOOK PART IN THE SORTIE ARE REPRESENTED IN GIBRALTAR BY THE ROYAL ARTILLERY, ROYAL ENGINEERS AND THE FIRST BATTALION OF THE ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIERS.
