  • Description

THE GHANAIAN COMMISSIONER FOR INFORMATION, MR IBRAHIM MAHAMA, THIS WEEK OPENED AN EXHIBITION OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS AT THE CENTRAL LIBRARY IN ACCRA, THE COUNTRY'S CAPITAL. THE EXHIBITION WAS MOUNTED BY THE GHANA LIBRARY BOARD TO COMMEMORATE THE COUNTRY'S ELEVENTH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY.

IN AN OPENING ADDRESS MR MAHAMA SAID THE EXHIBITION HOPED TO SHOW PARENTS, TEACHERS AND SOCIAL WORKERS THE RANGE OF LITERATURE AVAILABLE TO GHANAIAN CHILDREN. LITERATURE FOR CHILDREN, AS WELL AS ADULTS, HE SAID, MUST HAVE ITS ROOTS IN FUNDAMENTAL BELIEFS, CUSTOMS AND ACCEPTED PRACTICES.

HE DEPLORED THE LACK OF GHANAIAN AUTHORS WRITING SPECIFICALLY FOR CHILDREN, AND SAID THE GOVERNMENT WOULD BE PLEASED TO PUBLISH ANY WORK THAT SHOWED PROMISE. HE SAID LOCAL WRITERS COULD COUNT ON GOVERNMENT PATRONAGE TO ENSURE ADEQUATE FINANCIAL RETURN ON EFFORT.

MR MAHAM WAS LATER SHOWN OVER THE EXHIBITION BY THE DIRECTOR OF THE GHANA LIBRARY BOARD, MR A.G.T. OFORI.

THE BULK OF THE EXHIBITION IS DEVOTED TO READING FOR OLDER CHILDREN -- ADOLESCENTS ARE PARTICULARLY WELL CATERED FOR WITH BOOKS ON GUIDANCE AND DEVELOPMENT.

THE EXHIBITION CLOSES SON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13.
