  • Description

The United States Army has begun to purchase some new recruits--Marijuana Detector Dogs. Trained at a special army canine school in the United States, the dogs are being used at all U.S. Army points of debarkation in South Vietnam. Chosen for their keen sense of smell, these German Shepherds have been trained to detect the odour of marijuana. Postal packages, personal luggage, and personnel will be sniffed by one of the dogs before leaving South Vietnam. If the dog should indicate that he has detected marijuana, an immediate search will be made. The U.S. Army hopes that these dogs, together with the stiff penalties for possession of marijuana, will bring about a marked decrease in attempts to smuggle the drug out of South Vietnam. Maximum penalties for possession of marijuana include a dishonourable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and five years imprisonment.
