  • Description

Saudi Arabian First Deputy Prime Minister, Crown Prince Fahd Ibn Abdul Aziz, arrived in Cairo on Monday (22 November) evening for a 24-hour visit to Egypt.

SYNOPSIS: According to a Reuters news agency report he was expected to have talks with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, following his recent trip to Mauritania, Algeria and Morocco -- understood to be a mediation effort to solve the problems of the Western Sahara. This is the former Spanish territory now officially shared between Morocco and Mauritania, but claimed by the Algerian-backed Polisario Front.

Prince Fahd was greeted at Cairo airport by Egyptian Prime Minister Mamdouh Salem -- and other ceremonials customary for a man of his status.

The conflict between Algeria on the one hand and Morocco and Mauritania on the other, has struck deep at the heart of Arab unity. Communication between the two sides deteriorated to the point where diplomatic relations were severed in March this year.

Prior to this there were clashes between Moroccan and Mauritanian troops fighting against Polisario Front forces.

The Front claimed to have killed 317 Moroccan soldiers and wounded another 814 in the month after Morocco and Mauritania took over power in the Western Sahara earlier this year.
