    FOUR MINES IN NORTHEAST BELGIUM HAVE BEEN AT A STANDSTILL FOR MORE THAN A WEEK FOLLOWING THE UNOFFICIAL WALKOUT BY ABOUT 15,000 MEN.

    THE STRIKE HAS SPREAD TO ALL BUT ONE OF THE MINES IN THE CAMPING BASIN AND INVOLVES WORKERS BOTH ABOVE AND BELOW GROUND.

    THE STOPPAGE, FOR WAGE INCREASES AND A NEW MINIMUM SALARY, IS NOT BACKED BY THE MINERS' UNIONS WHO SIGNED A NEW AGREEMENT LAST MONTH INCREASING SALARIES BY 12 TO 15 PER CENT.

    ON MONDAY (12 JANUARY) VIOLENCE ERUPTED AT WATERSCHE! AS 500 MINERS CLASHED WITH POLICE AND OTHER WORKERS BROUGHT IN BY COACH TO WORK THE IDLE MINES.
