    The 74th Plenary session of the ruling All India Congress Party has been opened in Calcutta (Tuesday 26th) by its President, Dr. Sankar Dayal Sharma.

    The ceremony was attended by many eminent Congress members, including India's Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandi.

    In his opening address, Dr. Sharma called for the nationalisation of profitable industries... a call first made in 1931 during the days of British rule.

    He said he was frequently asked why the state only took over sick industries... never those making a healthy profit.

    In addition, Dr. Sharma called for reforms to combat corruption, and legislation to server press ownership from its connections with big business.

    The five-day conference is being attended by 30,000 delegates.

    SYNOPSIS: The 74th plenary session of the Ruling All India Congress Party has been opened in Calcutta by its President Dr. Sankar Dayal Sharma.

    After taking a salute the President hoisted the Congress flag watched by India's Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi and many eminent party members. This year the conference was held in the Salt Lake area of Northern Calcutta which last year housed a quarter of a million Bangladesh refugees.

    30.000 people attended this year's convention and at the opening ceremony they heard a group of young men and women sign patriotic songs.
