  • Description

ISMAILIA, ON THE EGYPTIAN SIDE OF THE SUEZ CANAL, IS A DEAD CITY - KILLED BY THE ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT.

IN PEACEFUL TIMES, 150,000 PEOPLE LIVED IN THE CITY. BUT WITH PEACE A MERE MEMORY, THE PEOPLE, TOO, HAVE GONE. ONLY 15,000, MOSTLY MEN, STAY TO MAINTAIN THE TOWN, AND KEEP ESSENTIAL SERVICES GOING.

THE GUNS HAVE DRIVEN THE PEOPLE OUT. ISMAILIA IS RIGHT IN THE CENTRE OF THE BATTLEGROUND FOR THE ARTILLERY DUELS WHICH EGYPT AND ISRAEL FIGHT ALMOST DAILY ACROSS THE SUEZ CANAL. WITHIN SIGHT ACROSS THE CANAL IS AN ISRAELI MILITARY POST. SHELLS FROM BOTH SCREAM OVER THE TOWN FOR SEVEN HOURS A DAY. MANY LAND IN THE STREETS.

THE TOWN, BUILT BY THE FRENCH 100 YEARS AGO, STILL HAS A HINT OF FRANCE ABOUT IT - LONG STRAIGHT STREETS, SHUTTERED WINDOWS. BUT NOW THE STREETS ARE LITTERED WITH DEBRIS, THE SHUTTERS HANG PRECARIOUSLY FROM BROKEN HINGES. SHELLING IN MARCH ALONE DESTROYED OR DAMAGED ABOUT 500 HOUSES. SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS HAVE BEEN HIT. A MOSQUE TOWER FROM WHICH THE MUSLIM PRIEST CALLED THE FAITHFUL TO PRAYER HAS BEEN DAMAGED BY SHELL-FIRE. BUT FEW OF THE FAITHFUL ARE LEFT TO PRAY. THOSE WHO ARE DIG TRENCH SHELTERS IN THE BULLET-SCARRED STREETS, AND WAIT FOR THE NEXT SALVO TO SHATTER THE SILENCE OF THIS GHOST TOWN.
