  • Description

Malaysia's tourist industry is booming. Aircraft arrive daily at Kuala Lumpur carrying not only visiting businessmen and transit charter passengers, but tourists from Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Europe.

Over the last two years, the Malaysian Government has been affording to improve tourist facilities. One of the first steps has been to clean up many of Kuala Lumpur's fine old buildings. Travel guides often point out some of the early colonial palaces and Government offices as having some of the finest architectural features in Southeast Asia.

One of Malaysia's least publicised advantages is its railway system. Trains from the capital are regular and cheap. Foreign tourists as well as local holiday makers are now using the railways to visit perhaps the country's most modern tourist institution -- a mountain resort where people can not only relax from working life, but where they can pursue a favourite Asian and Western pastime -- gambling.

At Genting Hill, about 80 miles north of Kuala Lumpur, visitors are able to take advantage of the cooler weather and some of the country's finest scenery. Recently, however, a private group have managed to combine a futuristic gambling complex with the area's natural tributes. They add up to one of the most popular -- and least known -- tourist centres in Southeast Asia.

A modern hotel capable of accommodating hundreds of guests daily, has been built in the heart of the mountain region. Besides gardens, a swimming pool and various other recreation facilities, Genting Hill supplies its visitors with the chance to win -- or lose -- fortunes in its modern casinos.

In recent months, increasing numbers of Americans and Japanese have been frequenting the gambling facilities at the hotel. The ???ing rooms are strictly policed by government-authorised inspectors and facilities are kept in peak condition to cope with ever-increasing crowds of customers.

Malaysia is hoping to provide more custom-made tourist areas. The success of Genting Hill is yet to be fully publicised, but the government is hopeful that heavy private investment will enable more of the country's better natural regions to be developed.
