    Background: Five years ago on Sunday (16 November 1975) the Syrian Minister of Defence and Air Force Chief, Major General Hafez Al-Assad, took over the leadership of Syria to become President of the country in a bloodless coup. and in Damascus on Sunday the Baath Arab Socialist party held a meeting at the Damascus University to mark the fifth anniversary of the event.

    The audience included the national and regional leaders of the Party, Government Minister, foreign and Arab diplomats and a large number of guests.

    The Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Abdel Halim Khaddam, was the guest speaker. He attacked the Sinai Accord agreement, saying that Egypt had given up the struggle for the liberation of the occupied territories. He reiterated a Syrian charge that there were connections between the civil strife in Lebanon and the Sinai disengagement agreement which Egypt and Israel concluded in September.
