  • Description

A NEW PROCESS BY WHICH MANY KINDS OF ORDINARY GREEN VEGETABLE LEAVES CAN BE TREATED TO PRODUCE EDIBLE PROTEIN WAS DEMONSTRATED TODAY (THURSDAY) AT AN EXPERIMENTAL STATION AT HARPENDEN, NORTH OF LONDON.

LEAVES AND STALKS FROM PLANTS SUCH AS PEAS, MUSTARD, POTATOES, BEANS AND SUGAR BEET AND MANY OTHER CAN BE PULPED AND PRESSED SO AS TO PRODUCE JUICE RICH IN PROTEIN.

THE MACHINE DEMONSTRATED TODAY IS CAPABLE OF PROCESSING ONE TON OF RAW MATERIAL AND PRODUCING FROM IT 40 POUNDS (18 KILOS) OF PURE PROTEIN.

THE RAW LEAVES ARE FED INTO A CRUSH MACHINE WHICH CUTS AND PULPS THE LEAVES. THE RESULTING PULP IS THEN DRAINED OFF. THE RESIDUE IS FIBROUS MATERIAL CAN BE USED FOR CATTLE FOOD.

LEAF PROTEIN CONCENTRATE - WHICH RESEARCHERS AT THE ROTHAMSTED EXPERIMENTAL STATION SAY IS AS NOURISHING AS FISH OR MEAT - CAN EASILY BE FLAVOURED OR USED AS A DIET ADDITIVE, MIXED WITH OTHER FOODS.

AN APPEAL WAS ALSO LAUNCHED YESTERDAY TO PROVIDE ONE OF THE PROTEIN-EXTRACT MACHINES TO WORK IN AN AREA OF NEED AMONG THE WORLD'S STARVING. IT HAS ALREADY BEEN USED EXPERIMENTALLY IN INDIA AND NEW GUINEA, WITH ENCOURAGING RESULTS.
