  • Description

In New York State, the icy rapids of the Hudson River, carrying melted snow from the Adirondack mountains, provided a challenging course for almost seven-hundred canoes and kayaks competing in the two-day Hudson River White Water Derby on Saturday (5th May).

The fastest and most exciting event was the giant slalom. More than 130 entrants threaded their craft through the twenty dangling slalom gates. Touching one brought a penalty of one minute and missing one a penalty of three minutes. If the competitor was unlucky enough to overbalance early on, he faced the one-and-a-half mile course on his own.

The fastest time was made by an entrant from Ontario who finished in nine minutes 47 seconds.
