  • Description

Far reaching measures to accelerate the pace of industrialisation in Africa is one of the main topics being discussed this week at the third conference of African Ministers of Industry in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. The conference opened last Wednesday (17 December) and will run for five days.

Kenya's Vice-President and Minister for Home Affairs, Daniel arap Moi officially opened the conference which is jointly organised by the Economic Commission for Africa (E.C.A.), the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the organisation of African Unity (OAU).

It is held every two years to review industrial development conditions in Africa and devise way and means of improving them.

A Committee on Industrialisation in Africa was set up following the second meeting of the conference which was held in Cairo, Egypt in 1973. Since then the committee has met twice and its chairman, Issa A. Shahin, who is also Minister of Industry and Mining in Egypt, will present the committee's findings and recommendations to this year's conference.

It is hoped that when the conference closes next week resolutions will be adopted by the 28 member countries to ensure concrete action toward a ??? effort that will lead to the industrial development of Africa and reformation of international economic relationships with other countries.
