  • Description

At an Army camp in Sarafand - whose location was kept secret until the last minute for security reasons - workmen were today (Sunday) putting the finishing touches to the barracks courtroom where Kozo Okamoto will go on trial tomorrow. Okamoto is the sole survivor of the three-man Japanese suicide squad which, acting on behalf of an Arab guerrilla organisation, carried out the Lod Airport massacre of May 30th, in which 26 people were killed, and more than 70 wounded.

The trial - which is expected to last fur or five days - is being conducted by a three-man military court, and Oamoto faces charges which can carry the death penalty. The death sentence has only been carried out once before in Israel - when Nazi War Criminal Adolf Eichmann was hanged 10 years ago.

Neighbouring barracks have been turned into communications centres for the 300 local and foreign journalists, radio and television correspondents due to cover the trial.

Both the Courtroom and information barracks have been screened off from the rest of the Army camp, and the strictest security measures are expected to be enforced throughout the trial.
