  • Description

The Mayor of Montreal, Mr. Jean Drapeau, is adamant that the 1976 Olympics will go ahead in his city, in spite of the fact that soaring costs and labour problems have seriously slowed the building programme.

The Mayor has been explaining to a Quebec Legislative Committee why the estimated cost of staging the Games has risen from 310 million dollars (130 million pounds sterling) to 653 million dollars (280 million pounds sterling).

The main reason for the delays in the building programme -- mainly the huge domed Taillebert Stadium and swimming hall -- was an sight-week strike by iron workers who are responsible for installing the re-enforcing steel in the concrete structure.

The strike was settled last Friday (17 January) when nearly all the 1,200 striking workers ??? to accept ??? of 85 cents (about 36 pence starling) an hour.

But the problems are not yet over. When the mon returned to the site they found work difficult as much as site was snowed under and materials and equipment had frozen ???.

And 20 pile-drivers who work on the Olympic village were also on strike for a shorter working week. they had stopped work nearly two weeks before, but this had gone unnoticed while the rest of the project was shut down by the steelworkers' stoppage.

The steel workers also threatened to walk out again. They found preparations for their return to work were not complete and most were sent home for the first couple of days after they officially ended their strike. This caused further dissension among the workers.
