  • Description

Two Soviet Embassy officials left Buenos Aires for Moscow on Saturday (7 November) after the Argentine Government had expelled them for alleged subversive activities.

The men -- Yuri Mamontov and Yuri Ryabov -- were arrested by political police on Wednesday (4 November) as they made their way to what was described as a secret meeting in Central Buenos Aires.

According to official sources the two men were apprehended after a brief chase and Mamontov tried to swallow a sheet of notes. Later, officials claimed, microfilm of key military installations was found in his pocket.

They were given 48 hours to leave the country and one hour before the deadline expired Mamontov, accompanied by his wife and child, and Ryabov boarded a flight for Paris. Diplomatic sources said they would travel to Moscow.

The two men belonged to the commercial section of the Soviet Embassy and apparently did not have diplomatic status.
