  • Description

A group, calling itself the Communist League of 23 September, have claimed responsibility for killing six policemen in Mexico City on Friday (4 June). It was the same group that kidnapped the daughter of the Belgian ambassador two weeks ago.

SYNOPSIS: As the families of the murdered policemen went into mourning. Mexican authorities intensified their search for the urban guerrilla group. Early reports said that the policemen were lining up to go on patrol when two cars sped past with sub-machine guns blazing.

But the district police chief later claimed that four vehicles had been involved, and the occupants of the second had gone into the police station and fired at the men there as well.

Nadine Chaval, the Belgian Ambassador' daughter was held for four and a half days by the group until it received a ransom of 408,000 US dollars. The money was raised from thousands of sympathisers in Mexico City who queued outside the Chaval family's home to hand over contributions. Collections were even made in city schools and offices. Nadine was very tired when released but said she had been treated humanely.

The kidnappers issued a statement saying they planned to seize Nadine's father but made what they called a military error. Their attack on the police station was well planned though and they apparently escaped unharmed. Another four policemen were wounded as they tried to escape the hail of gunfire.

The Communist League of the 23rd. of September are named after the date of a 1965 battle between the group and Mexican troops. They are thought to have about 500 armed followers and have become well known for their political abductions. In May 1973, The United States Consul to Mexico, Terrance Leo Hardy was kidnapped released three days later in exchange for 30 left-wing prisoners held by the Mexican government.
