Background: Work is underway on the construction of a new two million sterling (about 4.8 million dollar) market at Kaduna in Nigeria. Work is expected to be completed in February next year. It is reputed to be one of the most modern and largest markets in Nigeria. It will provide for two thousand lock up and one thousand open stalls and a large car park. Room also has been set aside for a police station and a bank.

When demolition of the old market began, most of the traders had to be moved to a new location. The new market is designed in the same manner as the old. It too had lock up stalls and open stalls for traders selling vegetables and fruit. However the new market will accommodate 60 butchers as well and conditions all round will be much better. New drainage is being put in to improve hygiene. An overhead storage tank will also be a feature of the new market. It will hold 35-thousand gallons of water for sewage and fire protection.
