  • Description

THE ROYAL NAVY FRIGATE, HMS BERWICK, IS NOW ESCORTING THE GREEK TANKER MANUELA ON HER SOUTHWARD VOYAGE TO DURBAN. A BOARDING PARTY FORM BERWICK WENT ABOARD THE TANKER YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) AS THE GREEK SHIP WAS HEADING NORTH FOR BEIRA TO UNLOAD A CARGO OF OIL FOR RHODESIA.

THE MANUELA WAS INTERCEPTED IN THE MOZAMBIQUE CHANNEL, 150 MILES SOUTH-EAST OF BEIRA ONLY A MATTER OF HOURS AFTER THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL EMPOWERED BRITAIN TO USE FORCE TO DETAIN AND ARREST SHIPS SAILING TO BEIRA WITH OIL CARGOES FOR RHODESIA.

THE OFFICERS OF THE MANUELA OFFERED NO RESISTANCE TO THE BOARDING PARTY FROM HMS BERWICK, WHO WERE ARMED. THE TANKER, OF ELEVEN THOUSAND TONS, IS NOW ABOUT 450 MILES SOUTH OF BEIRA.

MEANWHILE, ANOTHER GREEK TANKER OWNED BY THE SAME COMPANY AS THE MANUELA, THE JOANNA V, TODAY MOVED TO A BERTH IN BEIRA AFTER LYING FOR SOME DAYS IN THE HARBOUR. THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT HAS SAID IF THE SHIP UNLOADS HER OIL CARGO AT BEIRA SHE WILL BE ARRESTED WHEN SHE SAILS FROM THE PORT.

THE EASTER HOLIDAYS HAVE CONTINUED AT BEIRA AMIDST AN ATMOSPHERE OF INTERNATIONAL DRAMA. AN ESTIMATED EIGHT THOUSAND RHODESIANS ARE SPENDING THEIR HOLIDAY AT THE MOZAMBIQUE RESORT, ENJOYING THE TROPICAL CLIMATE AND THE PLEASURES OF THE SEA-SIDE.

AT THE SAME TIME, THE CAPTAIN OF THE JOANNA V, MR GEORGE VARDINOYANNIS, HAS BEEN IN DISCUSSION WITH HIS SHIP'S AGENTS IN BEIRA AND WITH THE GREEK CONSUL.

THE BRITISH CONSUL IN BEIRA HAS ALSO BEEN CLOSELY WATCHING THE DEVELOPMENTS SINCE THE ARRIVAL OF THE JOANNA V AND YESTERDAY'S RESOLUTION IN THE SECURITY COUNCIL.

WORK ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF STORAGE TANKS AT THE START OF THE PIPELINE FROM BEIRA TO RHODESIA HAS CONTINUED DURING THE HOLIDAY. TECHNICALLY, IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE FOR THE JOANNA V TO BEGIN DISCHARGING HER CARGO IN A MATTER OF HOURS. HOWEVER, THE SHIP'S MASTER HAS SAID THAT HE PUT INTO BEIRA TO UNDERTAKE REPAIRS AND TAKEN ON STORES.
