  • Description

When the third day of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) conference broke up in Vienna, Austria on Friday night (26 September), the thirteen delegates were still disagreed over a proposed price increase in oil.

When Saudi Arabia's Oil Minister, Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, returned to the conference after an overnight stay in London, England, where he had flown to make radio contact with his government to discuss the position, he said Saudi Arabia was sticking to its basic decision to seek an increase between five and ten per cent. He was adamant that the Saudis would agree to no more.

Throughout the day Saheikh Yamani stuck to his government's decision, and when the conference adjourned on Friday night there was an indication that the fundamental differences between Saudi Arabia and the other twelve countries had been overcome.

On Thursday (25 September) several delegates were still arguing for a twenty-six per cent increase -- but by Friday they were down to asking for twelve per cent.
