    THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS, U THANT, RECEIVED ROUSING APPLAUSE TONIGHT (TUESDAY) AFTER MAKING A STATEMENT TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY IN WHICH HE ACCUSED ISRAEL OF PROVOCATIVE ACTIONS ALONG THE UAR/ISRAELI BORDER DURING THE TEN YEARS THAT THE BORDER WAS PATROLLED BY THE UNITED NATIONS EMERGENCY FORCE.

    U THANT'S STATEMENT CAME DURING A DEBATE ON THE MIDDLE-EAST SITUATION. IN HIS STATEMENT HE OUTLINED THE EVENTS LEADING TO THE WITHDRAWAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS FORCE FROM THE AREA. HE SAID A REQUEST TO ISRAEL FOR PART OF THE U.N. FORCE TO BE STATIONED ON THE ISRAELI SIDE OF THE BORDER HAD BEEN REJECTED.

    DURING THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY DEBATE THE UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR PRESENTED A FIVE-POINT RESOLUTION AIMED AT SECURING A LONG PEACE IN THE MIDDLE-EAST. HE SAID THERE WERE LEGITIMATE GRIEVANCES ON BOTH SIDES AND THESE SHOULD BE EQUITABLY DEALT WITH IN ANY SETTLEMENT OF THE ??? CONFLICT.

    RESPONDING, THE UAR DELEGATE, MOHAMMED AWAD EL KONY, REBUFFED MR. GOLDBERG AND SAID THE UNITED STATES RESOLUTION COULD HAVE BEEN MORE STRONGLY WORDED TO SAFEGUARD THE PRINCIPALS OF EQUAL RIGHTS AND SELF-DETERMINATION FOR ALL PEOPLE.
