SYNOPSIS: Some communication needs no words ... and never has. Man probably did without words for thousands of years. (Yelling). But silence could not say everything for him. He invented speech.

Then, migrating all over the world, he developed a new need : to talk across distance.

So he invented telecommunications and opened a new ear of communication between men.

Telecommunications ... a way to tell the news as it happens.

... to transmit urgent data between computers.

... to guide a ship on a safe journey through dangerous waters.

... to carry a reassuring voice.

... to send help fast where it's needed most.

Telecommunications is what we make so much use of we take it for granted. Above all, its' a people ... reaching out to each other, helping each other, communicating to solve the everyday problems of life. How many of us recognize this problem? A telephone helps clove it. One of 255 million phones servient the needs of every nation on earth. Some important communication has no words at all.

It's computer talk ... data about how much was sold and how much to reorder. It helps make sure there is more on the shelf when you need it. (Music, Interruption: Announcer gives hurricane warning in Haitian French). The problem: How to give people needed information in an emergency. Radio is often the best means available. A problem for tomorrow: How to educate the teeming millions of our modern world?
    One effective answering television.

It, too, is part of telecommunications ... the many-sided technology that ties people to people, ??? there communicate and understand, helping the solve everyday problems and emergencies, and drawing them closer together for a more peaceful world.
